A new program, now on the App Store, attempts to mimic dedicated GPS navigation on the iPhone. Like a conventional GPS unit, XRoad's G-Map presents a choice of 2D or 3D views, and displays directions in the form of highlighted paths, with accompanying information such as distance and estimated time remaining. The app also avoids relying on an Internet connection, and instead uses a combination of GPS reception and an assortment of preloaded maps.

Users can also search for addresses, edit points of interest, and take down custom memos. Coverage of the app is currently limited however, encircling only most of the western US and some locations in the east. G-Map is a 932MB download, and costs $20.
