Apple's iPhone is the most popular phone for browsing the internet, but data shows that the phone is one of the most popular for uploading pictures as well. Extracted statistics from popular photo-sharing site Flickr shows that more members use the iPhone to upload photos than other devices, but Flickr notes that there are some limitations on the data. ComputerWorld notes that Flickr's data has the iPhone surpassing the 5-megapixel, flash-equipped Nokia N95 in terms of percentage of users and that over the past year, the iPhone has steadily pulled ahead of the top Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones. The blogger notes that the iPhone share could increase even further as the upcoming (but yet unannounced) 3G iPhone provides better upload speeds, but that the results are surprising given the current camera specs and relatively recent introduction.
"The results are pretty impressive given that the iPhone isn't even a year old and the specs on the camera are considered by many to be underpowered," the blogger concludes. However, the site notes limitations with data on camera phones.
According to Flickr, the graphs show the number of Flickr members who have uploaded at least one photo or video with a particular camera on a given day over the last year and are "normalized" to automatically correct for the fact that more people join Flickr each day: the graph moving up or down indicates a change in the camera's popularity relative to all other cameras used by Flickr members.
Flickr, however, notes that the graphs are only accurate to the extent that it can automatically detect the camera used to take the photo: "That is not usually possible with cameraphones, therefore they are under-represented."
