Apple begins selling the Apple iPhone 3G this Friday, July 11. But savvy shoppers are already making plans. Heres what you need to know.
According to Apple, the iPhone 3G will go on sale at 8 AM local time. That means that stores in Australia and New Zealand will already have begun selling their new iPhones before U.S. shoppers even wake up, so early reviews will be out before U.S. reviewers and bloggers will have a chance to try them out themselves. If nothing else, the early feedback will give those waiting in the wee hours something to read on their first-generation iPhones those that arent already on eBay, that is.
What are sales expected to be like? Retail analyst group NPD said it does not do predictions, but analyst Ross Rubin predicts a new flock will be ushered into the Apple fold. "While the lower price should serve as a strong inducement for consumers that wanted but couldnt afford the original models, the budget-conscious will have to take into account the data rates for 3G network access from AT&T," he said. "That said, greater availability of the handset in more countries around the world will certainly propel the iPhone 3G past the sales of the initial model. Apple wants to aggressively build the installed base because that creates a richer opportunity for developers and to expand the addressable market for OS X applications."
And that should mean a mad dash for the Apple store in the next few days. Before you head out, though, consult this checklist:
Find your target Apple Store or AT&T location. Apple hasnt said how many iPhone 3Gs will be allocated for each store. Keep in mind, though, that you probably wont need to wait overnight, as shoppers could waltz in a few hours after the first iPhone went on sale and pick one up. It all depends whether you want to be part of the experience or not; reportedly, lines are already appearing at some stores. But if you want to make sure, pick a store at an out-of-the-way location, and scout it out.

Bring a credit card and a photo ID; have your Social Security number handy, and bring your current wireless account number or PIN if youre new to AT&T.
