A London-based web technology firm has developed a server-based video streaming technology, capable of sending video feeds to factory-condition iPhones. Guardian.co.uk reports that the server technology � called Millicent by developer Best Before � would allow broadcasters to provide edited video feeds for the iPhone, and allegedly already has two UK broadcasters interested in what the architecture can offer. Best Before says that the streaming works best over WiFi, since the narrower bandwidth in the iPhone's "2.5G" receiver could cause for problems when viewing content. All video is viewed through Safari.
"Even two years ago the idea of broadcasting to phones would have cost millions, so we can test how far the technology has changed," said Mark Rock, CEO for Best Before. "Whatever people think of the iPhone it has fundamentally changed the market because the carriers no longer assume people are happy with a walled garden of services. The time has come for a new approach."
