Zipcar -- which says it's the world's leading provider of cars "by the hour or day" -- has released a widget to help iPhone users locate the nearest available vehicle. Designed as a green alternative to car ownership, Zipcar provides a network of cars in many areas of the country so users can rent as needed. Users can also arrange carpooling by sharing real-time location data via the iPhone. The company says its users tend to be "early adopters" so iPhone technology is good fit.

The widget is embedded in uLocate's WHERE, a free location-based application that points users to local businesses, entertainment and other points of interest. In addition to finding cars, users can locate the nearest StarBucks, the cheapest gas, concerts and friends with the "buddy beacon" feature.

"Twenty-five percent of Zipcar users are already equipped with an iPhone making those consumers the perfect audience to benefit from the power and convenience of WHERE," said Dan Gilmartin, VP of Marketing for uLocate Communications.

WHERE is available as a free download from the iTunes AppStore. The Zipcar Widget is included, but and can be activated immediately in areas where Zipcars are available.
