ZappTek says it plans to sell books for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch through the upcoming iTunes App Store. The Canadian developer says its Apple Legends book service will bring the full reading experience to users, including home screen icons, bookmarks and support for note-taking. ZappTek says it will start with a number of short stories and novels by science fiction author Michael A. Stackpole, who has written several books based on Star Wars characters. The company says more content will be added soon.

Legends supports the iPhones built-in ability move content as the device is rotated, allowing users to read books in a landscape view. ZappTek says each book has its own icon, and automatically returns to the last open page if a user pauses to answer a call or check e-mail. Double-tapping the screen allows users to zoom in.

The Legends Service requires the iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2.0, and will be available when the iTunes App Store opens July 11. Books will appear individually in the entertainment section of the App Store. Initially, novels will sell for $5, short stories for $2.
