U.K. customers looking to get their hands on an iPhone 3G Friday may find themselves out of luck.

In an e-mail to customers, wireless carrier O2 said it is working with Apple to get more of the high-anticipated handsets in stock, but it expects a shortage.

"Unfortunately, they have only been able to supply a small proportion of the number of phones we asked for, because they are launching simultaneously in 22 countries," O2 said in the e-mail. "We are confident that over time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come."

This announcement comes days after O2s online pre-order system came to a crashing halt after experiencing 13,000 orders per second. The company said it had invested heavily in additional capacity for the increased traffic, but the demand was just too great.

"The massive simultaneous crush exceeded even our worst cast assumptions," the company said in the e-mail. "Frankly, we have to admit we just werent prepared for this unprecedented level of demand."

The wireless company also said it expects each O2 store will have "a few dozen iPhones," and it expects the device to sell-out quickly.

Carphone Warehouse, an independent U.K. cell phone retailer which will also sell the iPhone 3G, said interest for the upcoming iPhone is ten times that of the original. Carphone sold out of its pre-order stock within a few hours of availability, and is expecting to see similar stock shortages on launch day.

Apples new handset will be go on sale in the U.K. Friday at 8 a.m. on a first-come, first serve basis the companies said.
