The California town of Los Gatos is using a wireless mesh system consisting of multiple virtual networks to deliver a range of access to indoor and outdoor networks to serve both town departments and offer free Wi-Fi service to citizens.

Powered by Firetides wireless HotPort mesh nodes and its HotPoint access point technologies, service is currently provided at the town hall, library, town neighborhood center, public works facility, and some town park areas. The town is outfitting the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department with in-car video technology over the existing wireless network.

"In addition to enabling personnel mobility and offering Wi-Fi access to the public," said Chris Gjerde, the towns information systems manager, in a statement, "the network delivers other unique benefits, especially with its combination of indoor and outdoor coverage." Gjerde noted that the new wireless network is an "important part of our emergency preparedness plans."

Firetide, which is headquartered in Los Gatos, said the network has been configured for inexpensive future enhancements. "Its free to residents," said a Firetide spokesman, "wherever they can get a signal."

The company has deployed its mesh network recently in varied situations. Late last month, Firetide reported that its wireless mesh system tied a video surveillance network of cameras to the West Palm Beach Police Department in Florida. Deployed in the toughest neighborhood in the 100,000-resident city, the network is aimed at helping deter gang activity, drug dealing, and prostitution. Mesh nodes are connected to Wi-Fi-enabled laptops in police cruisers.

West Palm Beachs police communications manager Michael Cambisios said the Firetide network enabled the police force to "reach into areas not accessible by fiber or cable, extending resources without increasing manpower." The system was designed and implemented by systems integrator Security 101.
