Enso whips up two smartphones and three new slates, but we wouldn't order any of 'em

Oh, Enso -- must you really give us a reason to hope? After dealing
with what felt like a case of the vaporwares, and then being epically
disappointed with the zenPad (which is now out of stock, curiously)
that you finally shipped, we just can't muster up the courage to look
fondly upon the five new products that are gracing your webstore. That
said, those that don't mind risk taking and actually enjoy the thought
of fighting for a refund have three new MIDs / slates to ponder along
with a pair of Android-based smartphones to consider. Let's break 'em
down real quick, shall we?

* zenPad 2 ($219; shipping now): Here you have a 5-inch,
Android 1.5-based MID with an 800 x 480 resolution resistive
touchscreen, a bundled stylus, inbuilt 3G, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, microSD
slot (8GB included), 128MB of RAM, 256MB NAND Flash, a 624MHz Marvell
PXA303 Xscale CPU, integrated accelerometer, onboard GPS, micro-USB
port, 3.5mm headphone jack and a battery good for 4.5 hours of use.
We're told that an Android 2.1 update is "imminent," but we believe
that about as much as we believe BP's promise to "make it right."

* zenPad 3 ($249; pre-order): This here tablet boasts the
exact same specifications as the zenPad 2 (right down to the battery
life and resolution), but it rocks a 7-inch design that'll aid those
who can't squint hard enough to see fonts on the 5-inch sibling.

* zenPad 4 ($199; shipping now): We hate to state the obvious,
but this is quite obviously an iPad KIRF -- right down to the Home
button. You'll find a 10.2-inch resistive touchpanel with a 1,024 x
600 resolution (one that Enso swears up and down "has a fast response
and works very well"), along with Android 2.1, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, 256MB
of RAM, 2GB of storage, a microSD slot (8GB included), a 1GHz Cortex
A8 CPU, built-in accelerometer and a 2,400mAh battery that's good for
5 to 7 hours of life.

* zenPhone ($349; shipping now): So... it looks like a Nexus
One KIRF, it's called a zenPhone, yet it says it's a MID. Oh, and it's
not this ZenPhone. Whatever the case, it's got a 4.3-inch resistive
touchscreen (800 x 480), 3G HSDPA radio, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth,
256MB of NAND Flash, a microSD slot (8GB included), a 3.2 megapixel
rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, a 2,600mAh battery,
onboard GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and -- wait for it -- Maemo 5
running the show. Yeah, seriously.

* zenDroid ($319; pre-order): In the market for a Droid KIRF,
are you? You've come to the right place, with this one offering a
4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen (800 x 480), 3G HSDPA, 802.11a/b/g
WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, an FM radio tuner, Android 2.1 ("upgradable
to 2.2," we're told), a microSD slot (8GB bundled in), 512MB of NAND
Flash, a 624MHz Marvell PXA935 processor, 5 megapixel rear camera, 0.3
megapixel front-facing camera, a 1,500mAh battery, onboard GPS, 3.5mm
headphone jack and a micro-USB connector.

ReSound's Bluetooth-infused Alera hearing aid

It ain't the first hearing aid to sport Bluetooth, but it's probably
the first one to make you think seriously about tossing that Loud N'
Clear you purchased in a haze at 3:30AM last year. Operating on the
2.4GHz frequency, the ReSound Alera (and the accompanying Unite
wireless accessories) actually allow those who are hard of hearing to
pipe in audio from TVs, stereos, cellphones and PCs without any funky
cables or fancy setup procedures. Better still, there's no blockage of
environmental noise, so folks can continue yelling speaking to their
grandkids while Judge Judy tears someone's soul apart in their left
ear canal. There's nary a mention of price (we're guessing that
doesn't bode well for bargain shoppers), but there's certainly a
demonstration vid hosted up after the break. Just make sure to jack
the volume to 11, cool?

Grackl released for iPhone

Barton Springs has released Grackl, a new instant messaging application for the iPhone. The app aims to combine social networking and personal messaging, with functions that allow the creation and control of groups, and the management of group members. The application supports images within conversations, and also includes an automatic archiving feature that allows users to look at previous conversations.

Grackl is immediately available from the App Store for free. Sometime this summer, the company expects to add a "Presences" feature which will enable users to post their location for specific groups to view.

DLO Jam Jacket Game

DLO has announced the immediate availability of the Jam Jacket Game, a silicone case for the second-generation iPod touch. The case is designed specifically for gaming, and adds both grip as well as protection. The Game also features a removable wrist strap, and a clear surface shield, protecting the screen from bumps and scratches. Openings allow access to all necessary controls, as well as the dock connector. The case is currently selling for $20.

App Store limits to loosen

Content restrictions at the App Store may lower significantly with the advent of iPhone 3.0, reports say. In tandem with iTunes 8.2, the next iPhone firmware is said to offer the choice of limiting app access by age. Parental controls divide access into 4+, 9+, 12+ and 17+ categories, suggesting that games with violence and some other forms of "adult" content may be allowed to go on sale.

Bolstering evidence is a recent rejection of the Newspaper(s) app by Makayama, which allows people to read several dozen newspapers from the US and the rest of the world. Although now available, the app was initially blocked from sale due to the Page 3 section of the UK's Sun newspaper, which features topless women. The published Newspaper(s) software excludes The Sun as an option.

In denying Makayama its initial access, an Apple representative wrote that due to the upcoming parental controls, it "would be appropriate to resubmit your application for review once this feature is available." Should Apple indeed introduce freedom of speech to the App Store, it may be able to deflect a constant stream of criticism from developers, who have noted that many apps are rejected for seemingly arbitrary offenses. The most recent incident affected the band Nine Inch Nails, whose NIN Access app was rejected due to a single song found in a podcast.

iPhone bicycle mount, film

USBfever has launched the latest in its line of iPhone and iPod accessories, the Bicycle Handlebar Mount & Holder and the 4-direction Privacy Film/Screen Protector. The handlebar mount is designed for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch, and allows users to keep a device accessible while riding. It is build of hard plastic, and described as suitable for handlebars measuring 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter. Two cushioned inserts are supplied.

The 4-direction Privacy Film/Screen Protector works with the iPhone 3G, and provides protection against scrapes and scratching, while also obscuring the vision of other people. Clear viewing is limited to 120 degrees horizontally, and 30 degrees when tilting in any given direction. The film also guards against dust and fingerprints, and can be washed and re-used.

Both the handlebar mount and the protective film are being sold through the USBfever website. The former is $12, while the film is $13.

Epson iPhone support

Epson has announced that its printers are now supported by EuroSmartz's Print the printer itself must be connected to a computer via networking or USB. Some supported document types include photos, PDF files and general business documents.

Compatible printers include Epson's Artisan 800 and 700 models. The Print & Share software is available from the App Store at a cost of $7.

Get Framed, Sales Tracker

* FitnessTrack ($4) allows users to keep a log of their weight and cardio workouts. The application includes a database of more than 60 exercises and allows users to enter their own. Exercises can then be organized into workouts which can be saved for quick access later. FitnessTrack also includes functions for tracking weight and measurements allowing users to view their progress against a personal goal.

* G ($5) is an arcade/puzzle game set in a futuristic Earth. Players try and hit targets with their rockets but must also take into account the gravitational pull that other objects will have on the trajectory. Players can increase their score by collecting powerups and taking advantage of bonuses that are awarded for destroying multiple targets with a single rocket.

* Pianofly ($2) is a music synthesizer and piano keyboard application for the iPhone and iPod touch. The application features a full 88 key piano that can be scrolled along for playing melodies that span across multiple octaves. Pianofly includes several different instrument sounds to choose from and also lets users modify the settings of these to create up to 80 of their own tones.

* Get Framed ($1) is a tool for adding frames to images stored on an iPhone or iPod touch. Users can import their photos then crop, rotate, enhance, and add one of the 96 included frames. The frames have been broken down into 12 different categories that include kids, travel, pets, romance and more. Finished images can then be saved to the users Photo Library or emailed to friends and family.

* Sales Tracker ($19) allows users to download the daily and weekly sales reports from iTunes Connect and view them in a structured format. Users can view the total number of sales, upgrades, free downloads and returns for each application along with daily revenue and revenues per application. Information is displayed sing both pie and line chards for showing the distribution of sales and trends over a period of time.

CDM-100 with iPod dock

GEAR4 has introduced the CDM-100, a CD micro system with dock for the iPod and FM/AM radio. The CDM-100 mixes a top-loading CD player, a universal dock for the iPod and a clock with an alarm and sleep mode. The built-in AM/FM radio provides 30 programmable preset stations, and 5 preset EQ settings such as flat, classic, rock, pop and jazz. The device also offers a line-in port for use with other music players, and a remote control.

The CDM-100 charges the iPod while it's docked and supports any click wheel iPod from the iPod mini, the fourth generation iPod, or newer. GEAR4's system has an official price of $120 and should be available today online or at stores.

First Look: Bento iPhone

With its tiny keyboard, the iPhone might not seem like the best platform for building a database. But FileMaker says it has found a way to exploit the iPhone's interface, multi-touch gestures and Wi-Fi capabilities to make Bento for the iPhone as useful as its desktop counterpart. The result is an app that has many, but not all of the capabilities of its full-sized sibling.

Users of Bento 2 for Mac will recognize the basic elements of the database, which was first introduced last year as a consumer-level alternative to FileMaker Pro. The iPhone app comes with the same 25 templates as the desktop version, including ones for event planning, time billing, recipes and home inventory. iPhone contacts are loaded into the app automatically, but unlike the Bento 2 desktop client, iCal events and tasks are not supported.

Since FileMaker is owned by Apple, it's no surprise that the mobile Bento interface borrows from other apps included by default on an iPhone. Users will recognize several multi-touch tropes, such as the slot machine-style scroll wheels from Calendar, used to select dates. There is a touch of iTunes as well, in the form of Cover Flow-style menus. The app also makes use of touch-dialing commands.

Bento for the iPhone works with or without the desktop version, but the ability to sync with Bento 2 allows users to enter long strings of data on their Macs instead of using the more cumbersome iPhone keypad. Syncing also extends the reach of the desktop software, since iPhones can be used to take pictures or enter data in the field.

Some data can be synced to the iPhone to view, but not edited. This includes calculation fields, certain related records fields, and movie or sound files under 10MB in size. Some types of Bento content do not work at all with the app, including iCal material, file list fields, automatic counter fields, message list fields and smart collections. FileMaker mentions that the app includes an "iTunes-style search field," but it does not sport an Advanced Find feature, like the desktop version.

Stone Design has released an update to its higher-end Twitter client, Twittelator Pro 2.2. The newest version offers offline tweeting features, with the automatic queuing and sending of tweets and the ability to auto-save and restore any number of drafts. Users now have the option to disable landscape mode when tweeting, and to double-tap the shrink button to undo shortening. With the automatic send function, any unsent messages will be automatically delivered when a connection is restored or the app is restarted.

Users can further swap accounts in the middle of creating a message, and choose between five image-hosting services: YFrog, Pikchur, TwitPic, Moby and TwitGoo. Each photo in a reply also shows the conversation thread.

The update is free to download for current Twittelator Pro users. People new to the software can buy it at the App Store for $5.

Alarm System, PS Tips+

* TopGun ($2) is a flight combat game that puts players in the cockpit of either a F-22 Raptor or a B-2 Spirt Stealth Bomber. The game includes 10 different levels that span across varying environments including an ocean, a desert and a city. The game features some of the original tracks form the movie including the hit "Danger Zone" and includes several medals and achievements to be won.

* Land of the Lost: Crystal Adventure (free) is an action/puzzle game where players have to help Rick Marshall escape the Sleestak temple. In order to progress through the 25 levels players must push blocks, build bridges and avoid obstacles including the Sleestaks. To gain higher scores players have to plan their moves carefully so that they can collect more of the crystals hidden around the levels. The game also includes photos, videos and sound bytes from the upcoming Land of the Lost movie starring Wil Ferrell.

* Bloons ($1) is a port of the popular web browser game for the iPhone and iPod touch. Players take on the role of a dart throwing monkey whose goal is to pop as many balloons as possible. The game features all of the bloons featured in the original game including ice bloons, bomb bloons, and tack bloons along with all of the original levels. Players will also find some bonus content that can be unlocking by mastering 50 brand new levels.

* Alarm System ($2) uses the accelerometer in the iPhone and iPod touch to detect movement and trigger an alarm. Users can set the sensitivity of the alarm which can help prevent the alarm triggering from a minor movement. Users can also select the sound the alarm will make when triggered and set it to play once or loop until deactivated. The application can also be set to call a specified number when the alarm is triggered.

* PS Tips+ ($2) is a tool for learning all of the shortcuts offered in Adobe Photoshop CS4. The application contains shortcuts for both the Mac and Windows version and includes a search function for finding specific shortcuts. PS Tips+ also has a random function that displays a random shortcut and an index that can be used for scrolling though a list of all shortcuts within the database.

Art.Suono dock introduced

David Wiener Ventures has, as part of its David Weiner Collection, introduced on Wednesday the Art.Suono. The iPod speaker dock and its transmitter are made of machined aircraft-grade aluminum and feature carbon fiber accents as well as fine detailing and finishes that gives it an industrial look. The transmitter can also accommodate a computer source, CD player, satellite radio or any other MP3 player via its auxiliary input jack. It uses 2.4GHz wireless technology to then send the signal to compatible wireless speakers, while also utilizing the Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum technique for a strong, drop-out-free connection that aims to maintain signal quality.

Art.Suono is comprised of a 5lb transmitter and a compact receiver that can be hidden out of sight which houses proprietary DWC-APHEX circuitry that restores the depth of compressed music files and improves bass. The transmitter can be hooked up to two receivers so it could send signals to more than one music system in a home or office.

The receiver has a large Engine Start power button, Shift input switch, a concealed input jack and LED indicators in addition to the large, machined aluminum volume dial.

iTunes kiosks coming?

iPod and iPhone owners may eventually be able to fill up their players using dedicated iTunes kiosks, a recent patent application hints. A traditional problem with Apple handhelds has been the limited means of loading new media; even following the advent of the mobile iTunes Store, the main method of adding music and video remains syncing at home. Using a kiosk, Apple notes, people could rapidly load players without a conventional network connection, in places such as airports, malls or hotels, or even within trains and jets.

Apple's proposal involves a hybrid kiosk, which could provide both local and remote media hosting. The local server would supply the media mostly likely to be bought, such as new releases. Shoppers could thus simply swipe a credit card and immediately fill their handhelds. To gain access to the complete iTunes library, users could login with their account information and download files through a dedicated Internet connection.

A dilemma with most media kiosks, Apple remarks, is that they rely on physical device connectors, which can not only wear out but experience deliberate tampering. Creating a Wi-Fi hotspot is an option, but brings with it new problems such as hacking and user overloads. The patent filing instead suggests the idea of a "virtual physical connection," in which the kiosk would somehow detect the presence of a nearby device and only then open up a wireless link.

Beyond iPods and iPhones, the technology could theoretically be extended to support computers and tablets.

Terminator, Rockstar

* inTouch ($3) is a tool that allows users to categorize their contacts by time zone and create custom timelines of a contacts availability. Users can enter a contacts information including name, phone number, address, etc. and also add information on the contacts time zone and hours of availability. Contacts will then be tagged with icons that indicate if the contact is available (green), about to become unavailable (yellow), or unavailable (red). This allows users to quickly see which of their contacts are currently available based on their daily schedule.

* Holiday Countdown ($1) allows users to see the next 25 upcoming US holidays and how long until each. The application also includes additional information on each holiday such as the day of the week it will occur, a description, a brief history and future dates of the holiday. Users can also add up to 200 of their own custom events such as birthdays and anniversaries. Custom events can also be set to recur weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or yearly, meaning users only have to enter an event once.

* Mercury ($3) is capable of displaying up to the minute temperature and conditions, forecasted temperatures, and precise sunrise and sunset information for any location in the world. The application uses a circular interface that layers the current temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, a colored representation, and atmospheric conditions. More detailed forecasts can also be obtained by bringing up the details page which gathers information from WeatherBug.

* Terminator: Salvation ($10) puts players in the role of John Conner, the leader of the Resistance, in a post-apocalyptic 2018. The game is a third person shooter that has been based on the upcoming Terminator movie. Players can choose from four different control layouts, each which takes advantage of the iPhone and iPod touches capabilities. Players will find 6 different weapons to use in the game to help fend of the 11 different enemies they will face across the games 8 levels.

* Rockstar ($2) lets users take a portrait picture from their photo album or with their iPhone camera and dress someone up like a rockstar with a variety of wigs, facial hair, jewelry and other accessories. There are also a selection of locals that players can use for the background of their image. The finished images can then be saved to the photo album, mailed to friends or posted on Twitter.

Apple approves NIN app

Apple has reversed course on the approval of the NIN Access 1.0.3 update, says Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. Initially rejected, the revised iPhone app is now freely available through the iTunes Store. Users gain streamlined access to content from the NIN homepage, including music, images, video and the site's forums.

The audio content is believed to be the source of the rejection, as when initially denying the attempted update, Apple cited only "objectionable content" in the form of the "The Downward Spiral." Reznor has explained however that since his Downward Spiral album is not available directly through NIN Access, Apple could only mean the record's title song, which plays during a streaming podcast. The published v1.0.3 app remains unchanged, in spite of the company's concerns.

Reznor and others have accused Apple approval policies of being arbitrary, sometimes varying from app to app or unfairly concentrating on tangential content, such as user-submitted categories on Twitter. It is believed that Apple may be willing to loosen restrictions thanks to the advent of parental controls in iPhone 3.0. Such a policy would not only lift negative publicity from the company, but likely increase App Store profits through the sale of previously banned titles.

Dexim DWP005 dock

Dexim has added the DWP005 MHub Dock Station to its lineup of iPod and iPhone accessories. The DWP005 is meant to reduce desktop clutter, providing a main dock, three USB ports and an SDHC-compatible card reader. The unit is able to sync with all iPods and iPhones, as well as BlackBerry, G1 and HTC phones by way of included micro- and mini-USB cables. Dexim is selling the DWP005 for $70.

EA Games has released new screenshots from its upcoming iPhone adaptation of The Sims 3, due out in June. The title lets players create simulated people and control their lives, for better or worse. Features of the game include new 3D visuals and open-world gameplay. Touch and accelerometer controls, meanwhile, should accommodate the iPhone's limited screen space.

The first glimpse of the game came as part of Apple's early iPhone 3.0 presentation in March. The event included a short demonstration of Sims 3, which had only just begun production at the time. A final release is expected on June 2nd.

NASCAR Ultimate for iPhone

220 Software has launched NASCAR Ultimate for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app features the latest schedules, standings, and race results from all three NASCAR series: Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Trucks. A context-sensitive search function works with YouTube, and allows people to view race previews, reviews from other fans, and pre- and post-race commentary from professional broadcasters or the drivers themselves.

Other aspects of the app include a news section that collects feeds from ESPN, Fox, Yahoo and NASCAR.com, plus a separate section that details individual statistics on each driver in a series. A podcast and custom video directory contains material such as crash compilations and commentary.

NASCAR Ultimate is a $4 download from the App Store.

Twitterrific 2.0 released

Iconfactory has released a major update to its iPhone Twitter client, Twitterrific. The v2.0 release has a redesigned user interface aimed at being more customizable, with new themes and timeline layouts. The timeline now also includes filtering, enabling users to more rapidly sort through updates.

Other key upgrades include extended author information, support for multiple Twitter accounts and conversation threads, which place tweets shared between people into a single list. Twitterrific 2.0 comes in standard and Premium versions, the latter of which removes the burden of advertising. The standard edition is free, while the Premium one costs $4.

Star Trek game for iPhone

Electronic Arts has debuted a new Star Trek game for the iPhone and iPod touch, designed to capitalize on the latest movie. The action game has players captain the USS Enterprise on a host of missions, during which Kirk and Spock make appearances and help gamers along. Players also fight against and alongside ships from series fiction, such as the Keldon, Valdore and K�tinga.

In order to maneuver the Enterprise, players can either tilt the accelerometer or touch on-screen controls. To destroy enemy ships, players simply tap to use the phaser, or select one of a collection of unlockable superweapons. Additional characters players encounter include Chekhov, Sulu, Scotty and Uhura, along with the Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian races.

Star Trek is currently on sale via the App Store and priced at $5.

Kindle Store for iPhone

Amazon has introduced a new variation of the Kindle Store, optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. The website is tied to the Kindle for iPhone app, in which users tap the Get Books button to launch the Kindle Store link in Safari. The formatting of the website has been specially tailored to the size and dimensions of Apple handhelds.

Kindle for iPhone is described mainly as a companion to the dedicated Kindle hardware, allowing users to continue reading e-books when switching between mobile formats. The feat is accomplished in part through Whispersync, which records bookmarks from Kindles, iPhones and Touches and ensures that a person can continue reading from a given point when loading the same file on a different device. Amazon may theoretically integrate book purchases directly once the option becomes available through the iPhone 3.0 firmware.

Digits, Flick NBA

* Brain Fit ($1) is a puzzle game where players must rearrange a group of pieces to form one rectangle. The game includes 90 different puzzles that have been broken down into three different difficulties. Brain Fit also includes simple and colorful graphics and its own playlist of relaxing music.

* inFact Hoops ($3) includes hundreds of trivia questions pertaining to current NBA players. The questions cover topics such as hight, position, picture, college, hometown, and teams played for. inFact includes both a practice mode and a scoring mode, where players are rewarded with points for answering questions in a defined period of time which slowly decreases as players progress through the quiz.

* PimpMyNews ($4) lets users create playlists of their favorite blogs or news stories from more than 1,200 sources and can read them aloud using text-to-speech. Users can create a list of their ten favorite new sources such as TechCrunch or the New York Times and the application automatically pulls stories from these sites, coverts them to audio and displays them in the news feed. Stores can then be read or listened to and also include all the media included in the original article such as pictures, audio clips, and video clips.

* Digits ($2) is a tool for quickly adding a phone number to the iPhone's contact list. On launch the application prompts the user for a phone number and then a first and last name. After this information is gathered the contact is saved to the address book and users can go their to add more detailed information if necessary.

* Flick NBA Basketball ($3) features several basketball inspired mini games such as: 3 Point Shootout, Hotshot Arcade, Long Shot, H.O.R.S.E. and the Ball Spin. Players can choose to play as one of 30 real world NBA players that represent every team in the league. Players have the option to play any of the game types solo against the computer or against another player via a WiFi connection.

Dubious app rejections

Apple has made a controversial rejection of two more iPhone apps, say parties involved. The first is Maza Digital's Drivetrain, a remote control program for the Transmission BitTorrent client. Initially met with an Apple message that the app would demand "unexpected additional time for review," Maza later received a notice saying that "this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights. We have chosen to not publish this type of application to the App Store."

Maza has expressed anger at the decision, calling it "ridiculous." The company notes that, despite its frequent association with piracy, neither the BitTorrent protocol nor any supporting clients for it are illegal. Drivetrain is in fact further detached from any possible piracy, only being able to stop, start and delete torrents on a Mac. Apple appears to be rejecting all BitTorrent apps wholesale, without any thought to their actual use, Maza alleges.

Apple has meanwhile rejected Lil' Shark's Me So Holy, a simpler app which lets people substitute a photo for the face of Jesus. The software was banned under Section 3.3.12 of the iPhone developer agreement, which blocks "obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple�s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users." Such rules are not normally used to address perceived blasphemy.

The approval process at Apple is often seen as arbitrary, most recently because of Nine Inch Nails' NIN Access 1.0.3, which was initially rejected because of song lyrics in a podcast but later approved without any changes. Parental controls in iPhone 3.0 may allow formerly "offensive" apps to reach the App Store.

Denon 2009 Lineup

Denon's American branch this afternoon bowed its core lineup for 2009 and headlined it with both Blu-ray players as well as network-aware iPod docks. The DBP-2010CI and DBP-1610CI both bring Blu-ray Profile 2.0 support for Internet-based special features and will play both AVC (H.264) and DivX video in HD. The higher-end 2010CI touts a higher-grade Anchor Bay digital imaging processor and a serial port for home automation. Both ship in July with the 1610CI costing $499 and the 2010CI asking a premium at $699.

The ASD-51N and ASD-51W in turn are companion pieces meant to bring iPod audio across a network; attaching to a home theater receiver, they not only supply music to the local receiver but to as many as five other Denon receivers. The new models can also be automated through IP-based control units, allow WPA encryption (on Wi-Fi) and tune into Internet subscription music services like Napster and Rhapsody. These ship in August, with the 51N using Ethernet-only at a $250 price and the 51W gaining Wi-Fi for $300.

Nine new home theater receivers are joining Denon's line and gain a new on-screen interface for HDMI as well as HDMI 1.3a (including Deep Color) support on all models. Prices will range from $349 to $1,999 and add newer features at the high end, including Ethernet-based media sharing and HD Radio from the $1,499 AVR-990 and AVR-3310CI upwards. The $1,999 AVR-4310CI has these plus Denon Link 4, which lets the HDMI-connected receiver steer clock and anti-jitter functions on newer Denon movie players. Shipments start this month and end in July for some models.

Rounding out the introductions are three in-ear headphone launches, including the AH-C360 ($49), AH-C710 ($149) and AH-NC600 ($199). While quality scales upwards through the line, the NC600 is unique in adding active noise cancellation beyond the passive effect from the earbuds themselves. Denon ships these by July.

MS targets iPod in Zune ad

In airing a new video, Microsoft has expanded its ad competition with Apple to encompass music support. The ad specifically targets the iTunes Store, and relies on a financial speaker named Wes Moss to criticize the value of buying tracks outright instead of subscribing to a service like the Zune Pass. At 120GB, claims Moss, the full-sized version of the iPod classic would cost roughly $30,000 to fill when using the iTunes Store.

The Zune Pass, by contrast, costs $15 a month, and lets users download an unlimited number of tracks. The ad does not mention however that subscribers can only permanently keep 10 tracks a month, and that any track not chosen to keep is lost should a person unsubscribe. The latter music can also be synced only to Zune players.

Microsoft advertising has become intensely focused on Apple in recent months, a delayed response to Apple's long history of anti-Windows campaigning. The spearhead in Microsoft efforts has been the Laptop Hunters series of TV spots, which observe that comparatively-equipped PC notebooks are frequently cheaper than MacBooks. The company has been slowly eroding computer marketshare to Apple during the past several years.

TLA Systems, developers of the PCalc iPhone application, have announced that their application is currently on sale for $5, half of its usual price. PCalc is an advanced calculator that includes additional features not found in the iPhone's default calculator. It includes an RPN mode, an extensive set of unit conversions, a paper tape, engineering and scientific notation, as well as support for hexadecimal, octal and binary calculations.

Macminicolo has announced that it is starting a new Mac Server Series on building up a Mac server. The guides will cover topics such as setting up a server, running a website or multiple websites, and running a file server. The series is a follow up to one that was done a few years ago and includes new information on using more recent hardware and software. The series shows how to set up a Mac mini running OS X Leopard and includes links to free and inexpensive software that can be used. The first video should be posted soon and anyone interested can sign up to receive email notifications, subscribe to the Far Away RSS Feed or follow Macminicolo on Twitter to see when videos are posted.

A YouTube video has recently been posted that shows the band FeelAbout performing their song Follow Me Down using only iPhones and iPod touch devices. The band consisted of four instrumentalists running applications that are available in the App Store along with a vocalist. The guitarist was using iShred ($5), the pianist was using Mini Piano (free) and the drummer and bass player were both using Band ($4). This is a small example of the capabilities that the App Store has provided for iPhone users and developers.

Resident Evil for iPhone

Developer Capcom has released Resident Evil: Degeneration for the iPhone and iPod touch, extending its survival horror series to smaller handhelds. The title is based on the CG movie of the same name, and has players explore Harvardville Airport as they solve puzzles, rescue other humans and gun down zombies. Environments are rendered in real-time 3D, and viewed from a mix of third- and first-person perspectives.

To control a character, players rely mostly on the combination of an on-screen direction pad and context-sensitive action buttons. Among these are ones for zoom, laser targeting and melee combat, as well as accessing objectives and inventory. Also present in the game are motion controls, which can be used to reload a weapon or shake off zombies.

Degeneration is a 9.5MB download, and costs $7. The iPhone 2.1 firmware is required.

SlingPlayer app without 3G

Apple will publish the SlingPlayer iPhone app within the next 24 hours, but without any form of 3G support, developer Sling Media is said to have confirmed. The software is designed as extension of the company's Slingbox hardware, which broadcasts TV from a person's home to a remote Internet destination. Using SlingPlayer, people should be able to view streams, change channels and control DVR units.

The finished app can connect only over Wi-Fi however, in what is believed to be a concession to iPhone carrier AT&T. Through its terms of service the company has effectively banned redirecting TV over 3G, a strategy deemed necessary to prevent oversaturing bandwidth. As a consequence however, the range and usefulness of the iPhone app has been substantially diminished.

SlingPlayer Mobile will sell for $30 at the App Store, and officially support the Slingbox PRO, SOLO and PRO-HD. Older hardware is also said to be compatible, but not officially supported.

GEAR4 intros CRG-60 clock

UK-based GEAR4 has recently added to its comprehensive lineup of iPod accessories with its CRG-60 alarm clock and iPod dock. There are two alarms, with each giving users the option of waking up to music from the docked iPod, any FM radio station or a buzzer. The alarm clocks have snooze, sleep and nap functions, while the large LCD screen can be dimmed at night.

When plugged into a wall, the CRG-60 will charge connected iPods. Users can also power the dock with six AA batteries, though doing so will not charge the connected iPod. The CRG-60 will be available in the UK this June for the equivalent of nearly $54. [via Pocket-lint]

The application can locate a user and then present news that is relevant to that area of the world and includes a customizable watch list that can be used to monitor stocks.

* Postage ($3) is a tool for creating electronic postcards on the iPhone and iPod touch. Users can import their own photos and add them to the included postcard designs along with personalized messages. The application includes more than 50 different postcard layouts and allows users to pan, zoom, rotate and add effects to their photos.

Overcoming a small but significant delay, PopCap has at last launched the iPhone version of Peggle, its well-known puzzle game. Players fire a metal ball from the top of the screen, with the goal of knocking out as many blocks as possible before it reaches the bottom. Special bonuses are awarded for unique combos and trick shots.

The iPhone game includes 55 regular levels and 40 Grand Master challenges, which can be chosen individually through the Quick Play or Challenge modes. Gamers can additionally play against others in the Duel mode, and record unusual shots for later playback. Separating the port is a new Extreme Precision wheel, meant increased accuracy, and a series of new style bonuses, such as Off the Wall and Double Long Shot. Agile Messenger also includes support for typing in the landscape orientation and allows users to move between chat windows by swiping left and right.

* Elvis Mobile (free) provides users with access news, images, videos, and more that is related to Elvis Presley. The application also provides users with access to a Graceland Livecam that gives fans a live view of the mansion in Memphis. Another features is the ability to report Elvis sightings around the world. When users spot an Elvis lookalike they can snap a picture with their iPhone camera and submit it to Elvis.com or Facebook.

App Store profits minor?

The App Store has not been as profitable for Apple as one might expect, claims the venture capital firm Lightspeed. The company recently achieved the goal of over 1 billion app downloads, but of these, the ratio of paid apps is said to be anywhere between 1:15 and 1:40, according to people involved in the industry. This translates into just 25 to 60 million downloads which could generate income for Apple.

An O'Reilly survey is said to show that the mean price for paid apps is $2.65, which if multiplied by 25 to 50 million, results in cumulative revenue of $70 to $160 million. Subtracting the 70 percent owed to developers, Apple may have only earned $20 to $45 million from a billion apps. Such a figure is moreover believed to be optimistic, given that a weighted average app price of $1.50 would cut Apple revenue down to between $12 to $27 million.

Lightspeed suggests that like the music and video sections at iTunes, the true purpose of the App Store is to encourage people to buy iPhones and iPod touches; some 13.7 million iPhones alone were sold in 2008, each being far more profitable than an app. The rate of app sales is said to be increasing however, as while it took six months to reach 500 million downloads, only half that time was required to add another 500 million. A third-generation iPhone and the iPhone 3.0 firmware could accelerate sales further.

ProjectsWizards has released an update to its Merlin project management application for both the iPhone/iPod touch and Mac, along with a new version of its Merlin Server bringing it to 2.7. The upgrade to Merlin 2.7 allows users to share projects with the iPhone and iPod touch and adds support for the Merlin Server. By enabling the three applications to work together users can access and share their Merlin projects from any iPhone, Mac, or supported web browser.

In addition to the extra support, Merlin 2.7 also includes enhancements to help simplify use, to increase stability, and improve overall performance. Also the new Merlin iPhone and iPod touch version 1.0.1 resolves a connectivity issue that occurred via Bonjour, as well as provides a fix that prevented projects from being synchronized if it contained special characters in the project title.

case-mate has released the Fuel, a new protective phone case. Models exist for both the iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry Bold. A soft-grip holster design is used, built around a rechargeable lithium polymer battery.

The battery adds up to seven hours of life to the Bold, and up to nine hours to the iPhone. If the phones are kept on standby, the battery provides up to 480 hours of power for the Bold and 250 hours for the iPhone. An on/off button can be used to control draw, and three color LED lights indicate the amount of power left. Users need only connect the case through mini USB to charge it.

Apple execs detail plans to expand iPhone share

Apple executives have disclosed several strategies aimed at expanding the company's market share with the iPhone and Mac products. In comments made to Oppenheimer analysts, company officials noted the potential for significant growth of the Mac brand in international markets, which have shown a five-percent revenue growth in Europe while domestic shipments slid by eight percent.

To company considers the iPhone to be "still in its early days and could gain share by: providing more functionality; lowering prices; growing geographically; or segmenting the market with different models," wrote Yair Reiner, an Oppenheimer analyst.

Reiner confirmed that the comments originated with Apple's employees "[T]hey are not saying they will necessarily do all of these," the analyst told AppleInsider. "This is basically the menu of options."

A number of analysts have expected the company to introduce a lower-priced iPhone alongside the flagship device. Mark Abramsky of RBC suggests the new model could omit 3G and GPS functions, along with limit on data usage, but with a $100 price tag and a cheaper data plan.

"Apple said that one thing would be a constant: iPhone will remain a software centric device," Reiner noted. The company appeared to be "particularly excited" about prospects in China, a market that would clearly benefit from a lower entry price.

Many predict Apple will launch an updated iPhone or new models sometime in June or July. Although several reports suggest the announcement will occur during the WWDC keynote, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster expects the company to hold a surprise media event sometime later.

The application measures a user's knowledge of 250 words which are frequently included in SAT examinations. The app features four types of timed challenges with questions relating to positive or negative connotations, synonyms, antonyms and definitions.

The application utilizes the Multi-Touch interface, enabling users to quickly select answers by swiping the screen or shaking the device. Performance is tracked, with a display of showing mastered terms. An index of the words is also included, with definitions, audio pronunciations and a section of speech that includes the word.

The Princeton Review's Vocab Challenge is available through the App Store for $5.

iPhone SlingPlayer hurt to help U-verse app?

AT&T's decision to disallow 3G for the iPhone edition of SlingPlayer may have been motivated as much by desires to quash a competitor as it is to avoid congestion, a claim suggests. Although AT&T's official explanation is that streaming TV consumes too much bandwidth, a tip from Gizmodo purports that the carrier has the ulterior motive of crippling SlingPlayer to protect a future U-verse app. Supposedly called i-Verse, it would let subscribers to AT&T's IPTV service either stream live TV over the 3G network or else play shows already recorded on the DVR.

The move would push users to sign up for U-verse rather than use AT&T only for the iPhone service. SlingPlayer technically allows any compatible set-top box to stream its output through a Slingbox and so can work with rival TV providers or third-party DVRs, such as TiVo's devices.

Whether or not this is the motive isn't clear and is potentially controversial as it may run afoul of competition laws. However, AT&T has publicly acknowledge that it wants to tie the iPhone to U-verse and has mentioned moving DVR recordings to iPhones as one of its long-term goals. The source for the new rumor says that i-Verse has been in full development since a private preview earned a favorable reaction last year.

AT&T hasn't yet been available for comment but is expected to deny the allegations.

Critics have noted that, while AT&T claims its terms of service bar streaming live TV over a network, other smartphones like the BlackBerry Bold, Nokia 6650 and multiple Windows Mobile devices can all download SlingPlayer versions that specifically allow streaming over AT&T. The provider has argued that the iPhone is more powerful, though the Bold is theoretically faster and supports more software features, like multitasking.

Gameloft recently released several screenshots and a trailer for its upcoming iPhone game, New York Nights: Success in the City. Players start the game by arriving in New York City where the main character is hoping to find success. The game then plays out as a simulation providing players with life choices that affect the outcome of the game. Open-Xchange has released its latest server applications, OXteder Mac OS X and OXtender Mobile Web. Both forms of the software enable users to access and edit information and documents stored on the Open-Xchange Server through its native Mac or iPhone applications. Each functions both online and offline, with the server sync updated every time the program is online.

Both forms of OXtender can sync contacts between Open-Xchange and Address Book, as well as appointments and tasks between Open-Xchange and iCal. The Mac version is capable of automatic synchronization with all connected services and devices such as MobileMe, iPhones, iPods, or any other handsets with iSync support.

OXtender is only available to Open-Xchange users. The standard Open-Xchange software costs $675, while OXtender is free for both new and existing users.

ProPrompter offers teleprompter tools for iPhone

Bodelin Technologies has released ProPrompter, a teleprompter application for use with the iPhone or iPod touch. The application enables each mobile device to be used as a teleprompter, with options for screen scrolling, several speed presets, both landscape and portrait modes, and on-screen help. ProPrompter can also be adjusted for improved readability in brighter settings by changing background and text colors.

Users also have free access to the ProPrompter Producer script management website where they can host their text files. The iPhone can access each script instantly by refreshing the script list in the application.

To hold the iPhone while viewing the prompts, Bodelin has released the ProPrompter Wing and the ProMag. Using the application's mirror feature, the ProMag projects a magnified text from the iPhone screen onto a mirror in front of the camera lens. This makes the text twice the size of the iPhone screen. Alternatively, The ProPrompter Wing attaches the iPhone to an adjustable arm next to the camera, which holds the iPhone in landscape mode.

The ProPrompter application is available from the App Store for $10. The ProPrompter Wing and the ProMag are both available from the Bodelin website for $130 and $1000, respectively.

Altec Lansing recently introduced its BackBeat 903/6 Bluetooth headset at the currently ongoing Macworld Expo and will also display them at the CES show later this week. The headset, developed with cooperation from Bluetooth earpiece maker Plantronics, stays in place thanks to the use of both ear canal-sealing ear buds and ear hooks. Plantronics' dual-mic AudioIQ technology is incorporated into the headset to increase call quality and raise call volume depending on ambient noise levels.

Users can dial by voice, redial numbers or transfer calls from the headset back to the phone and vice versa. Unlike the 903, the BackBeat 906 includes a transmitter that endows cellphones such as Apple's iPhone with the necessary Bluetooth A2DP profile for streaming music. Either headset includes Bluetooth 2.1+EDR support, while the 3.5mm auxiliary jack allows connecting devices that do not have Bluetooth functionality. A2DP, AVRCP, HSP v1.1 and HFPv1.5 stereo audio profiles are also supported. Battery life is rated at 7 hours of talk or music listening time, while the Bluetooth range from the paired device is 33 feet.

The Altec Lansing Backbeat 906 will be available in February, priced at nearly $130 with the iPhone transmitter, while the Backbeat 903 set ships at the same time for $100 as they do not include a transmitter. [via Wired]

XtremeMac intros Micromemo

XtremeMac on Monday announced it will display the Micromemo accessory for the fourth-generation iPod nano that will allow users to make voice recordings on the Apple device. The digital voice recorder features a detachable omni-directional microphone mounted on a flexible neck. The Micromemo connects via the nano's dock and uses the device's battery for power.

The Micromemo's built-in speaker lets users share their recordings and possibly play back other stored music files. The files are saved as WAV clips and are automatically recognized by iTunes, then sorted by date and time of recording. Controlling the Micromemo is handled via the nano's own menu, which also displays the recording time as well as record status. A 3.5mm auxiliary jack lets users plug in other devices to record directly from PCs or other MP3 players.

Due to launch on the market in March, the Micromemo will be priced at $50.

Pocket Informant, iPhone

Mobile PDA and WebIS (booth 1438) announced Pocket Informant for the iPhone/iPod touch. Available previously only for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices, the iPhone/iPod touch version offers an integrated calendar with tasks and search options, customizable settings, and sync capabilities for Google Calendar and ToodleDo through a network connection. The software also enables full task management, customizable smart groups, and smart groups for filtering overdue, completed, and due today.

Other features for the calendar include agenda; day, week, and month views; the ability to create and edit recurring appointments as well as add attendees; and full "landscape" support. Each row will display up to three lines of text, and the time bar quickly displays a user�s availability.To navigate through the days, weeks or months, simply slide a finger in the desired direction.

Also added is a "today view" function that displays daily events, things To Do, and next action To Do for GTD. When creating time and date appointments users can drag and drop the information in.

WebIS will be presenting Pocket Informant for the iPhone/iPod touch at Macworld Expo; the final release date has yet to be determined, however the App has already been priced at $13.

Docking speaker station maker for iPods and iPhones iHome announced on Tuesday it will debut three new products to its range in 2009 at the CES show due to kick off tomorrow. The company will show off its new flagship product, the iP1 speaker system that support iPods and iPhones and is rated at 100 watts for its twin 4-inch woofers and two 1-inch silk-dome tweeters. The Digital Power Station processor was engineered by Bongiovi Acoustics and iHome claims the product is its most advanced ever.

iHome will also introduce the iP71 computer speaker system, its first that is also compatible with iPods and iPhones and can sync the devices with a user's iTunes library. A switch is included to prevent the synchronization when users just want to listen to their music. The system also plays and charges all docking iPods and iPhones. Sound is reproduced via a pair of Reson8 speakers.

The iH15 LED Color Changing Stereo System cube only accommodates iPods and is unique thanks to its translucent design that lights up in a variety of colors. Users can either pre-set their own favorite color or let the cube select its own light-up sequence based on the tracks that are playing. The iH15 uses a set of Reson8 speakers and a passive subwoofer to reproduce a broad range of audio.

No release dates or pricing information for the new products has been released, though the iH15 is believed to cost just under $85.

AKG Reaches US

Harman today said its headphone brand AKG will finally start shipping to the US and provide a new choice for comparatively high-end personal audio. The move should bring a dozen earpieces from the company's current lineup and is headlined by the K142 and K242 semi-open headphones as well as the fully closed K172 and K272; all four have gold-plated connectors and have gimbal suspension that more comfortably adjusts the cups to fit different heads. Most have a minimum 18Hz frequency response (16Hz for the K272). These range between $170 and $270.

The company is also promising a slew of smaller or foldable headphones with closed backs that include the K420, K430, K450 and the K518 LE. All have a pseudo-3D folding mechanism that keeps them small for travel, while the K430 adds an integrated volume control and the K450 includes a detachable extension cable. The LE is a special edition that includes extra passive noise isolation versus other models. Prices for these range between $70 and $100.

A set of in-ear buds is also shipping and includes six basic models ranging from the K309 to the K319 ($17 to $90) that improve bass response and add in-line volume in more advanced models. The K321, K330 and K340 are in-canal models and generate frequencies as low as 11.5KHz in the top-end model. These sell for $50, $80 and $90 each.

All the headphones should be available starting from March.

Shure SE115 and More

Shure's presences at CES and Macworld alike today were kicked off with the launch of new in-ear headphones and USB audio peripherals. The SE115 is claimed as a breakthrough that improves bass response in often weak single-driver headphones; a new dynamic unit produces better low-end frequencies without resorting to a smaller driver that itself would cut out much of the intended sound. They also signal a break in style for Shure and now come in blue, pink and red in addition to the conservative black used before.

The company expects an SE115 set to retail for $100 and will start shipping during the spring.

Two USB condenser microphones, the PG27USB and PG42USB, are also part of the launch and carry a large diaphragm for a wide dynamic range, a pre-amp to boost the outgoing sound and a built-in, lag-free monitoring system that lets users hear both monitor and playback sound at the same time. The PG27USB at $200 is designed to be neutral while the PG42USB boosts the price to $250 and is biased towards lead vocals in singing.

The X2u Adapter is a simple converter that plugs any XLR input, such as from an instrument or studio mic, into a Mac or PC's USB port. It includes the same lag-free monitoring as the microphones and can adapt to the phantom power from condenser mics. It should sell for $130.

All three of the USB add-ons are due to ship sometime in the spring.

iTunes at MW09

In concluding its Macworld 2009 keynote, Apple has confirmed a switch to a variable pricing model for iTunes music, where previously the company charged a flat 99 cents per track. Beginning in April the company will offer three tiers of pricing: 69 cents, 99 cents and finally $1.29, with a greater proportion of tracks falling under the bottom tier than the top; all tracks aged less than six years should remain at 99 cents. The scheme is said to be attributable to flexibility demands from record companies.

It has likewise resulted in a substantial expansion of iTunes Plus, which as of today is offering over 8 million songs DRM-free, through the addition of tracks from all major labels including Universal and Sony BMG. The song count should expand to 10 million by the end of the first quarter of 2009.

Apple finally notes that the iPhone's Wi-Fi Music Store is now simply named the iTunes Music Store, as it supports downloading over both Wi-Fi and cellular connections. Content and pricing should remain identical to the desktop store.

iSkin has announced multiple products at Macworld 2009. The company has a new iPhone case, a new earphone set for the iPhone and numerous new laptop bags. iSkin's new iPhone case, The iSkin Flex, features a PVC based hard case with a soft, flexible bottom flap, which allows the iPhone entry to the case and protects it from bumps and scratches. The new case comes in black, sliver and red and features a removable, silicone iPhone camera lens protector.

iSkin also announced their new iSkin Cerulean XLR 2 iPhone headphones, with an integrated microphone, and flexible earbud joints. It also features anti-bacterial plastics. The headphones will be available in White and Red, a limited edition black and red and six other color schemes.

iSkin is also debuting a line of pressed leather cases, using reclaimed leather in an effort to help the environment while protecting Mac laptops. It is also releasing a multi-colored neoprene notebook bag geared towards kids who need to protect their Macs. Most of the products should ship in the next two weeks, and pricing has not yet been announced.

Eos Converge System

Eos Wireless took advantage of both Macworld and CES to launch the Converge. The multi-device system is designed to automate piping audio wirelessly to speakers within a maximum 150 feet of a core transmitter. Each receiver includes its own controls and lets owners pause and skip tracks without needing a separate controller. Setup is also fully automated, Eos says.

Unlike most such systems, Eos is dividing its wireless devices into groups. A Group 1 transmitter is designed for Macs, PCs and generic audio devices and supports either connecting through a 3.5mm headphone jack or through USB; no extras are available. A Group 2 unit adds an amp that bolsters the power for speakers that otherwise wouldn't be capable of driving sound themselves. A final Group 3 choice includes a full 2.1-channel sound system for those who need an entirely independent system.

One module is also available that includes a universal dock for iPhones and iPods. Eos doesn't provide full pricing but starts the line at $90 per piece, with all its Converge elements should start reaching stores in March.

Demonstrating at booth 1902 during Macworld, Griffin has revealed a number of the new iPod and iPhone accessories it will ship during the coming year. Prominent amongst these is the TuneBuds Fit, a pair of in-ear headphones with an "anatomically correct" curved design, meant to more comfortably slide into the ear canal. The shell of the headphones is made of aluminum, claimed to dampen resonance, while sound is produced via 10mm drivers. Fits should begin shipping in February for $50.

Three new power accessories include the PowerBlock Reserve, a device capable of charging iPods, iPhones and a separate battery simultaneously; once the battery is full, it can be removed from the Reserve and used to charge a player away from an AC socket. The PowerJolt Reserve serves a similar purpose, but plugs into a car's power outlet instead of a wall. Griffin is also preparing the FireWire-to-USB Charge Converter, which allows FireWire-era iPod accessories to power more modern Apple devices. The Converter is shipping in the middle of this month for $30, and will be followed by the $40 Reserve devices in April.

Griffin's remaining lineup consists of the SmartShare USB, which adds an extra USB port to the MacBook Air, and the Noise-Reducing Audio Cable, a six-foot long product with an inline noise filter. The cable is designed to reduce hum generated when connecting a player to a car's aux-in port. It should ship in February for $20; the SmartShare, also $20, is currently shipping.

AOL has announced two of its latest iPhone/iPod touch applications, SHOUTcast Radio and ICQ, along with a new AIM v2.0 to its popular instant messaging application. SHOUTcast offers over 26,000 professional and community programmed radio stations that users can search through and save for quick access. Complete with an accelerometer control, owners can shake the iPhone/iPod touch in order to change stations. The application also displays radio stations by popularity and stream quality, giving users the chance to choose a station best suited to their current network connection.

ICQ for iPhone provides a mobile client for the real-time instant messaging service where users can connect to anyone on the AOL network. It provides a contact list for friends and also allows users to assign a picture to each content When talking with people on the application, simply flick your finger to switch conversations.

Features for the AIM update offers new SMS notifications to let users know when they receive a new IM, even if the program is not running, and access to contacts in the devices address book directly from AIM.

SHOCKcast is available for free from the App Store, while ICQ and the AIM update have yet to be given release dates.

iLuv has announced the latest in its line of Portable Multimedia Players for iPod and DVDs, the i1166 9-inch. Complete with a docking station for the iPod that charges the device while providing full remote control, the i1166 also offers video output for TV connectivity, and compatibility with DivX videos. Display functions are offered to allow multiple subtitle, angle, and audio options, plus a fast motion playback and zoom operation.

To insert new music, i1166 comes with built-in SD/MMC card and USB support. A digital photo frame feature has also been added to enable the viewing of photos from built-in memory, memory cards, USB, DVD�R/RW and CD-R/RW.

Three different power sources are available to charge the i1166 including AC, DC car adapter, or the built-in Li-Polymer rechargeable battery. Media playable in the device are DVD, DVD�R/RW, CD, VCD, CD-R/RW, MP3, MP3 CD JPEG, Kodak, DivX, and MPEG-4. A remote control is included with the device.

Phanfare Photon for iPhone

Phanfare has released a version of its photo and video sharing software for the iPhone and iPod touch, Phanfare Photon. The application allows users to upload and store photos and videos onto the company�s website, where they can be imported to any device using Phanfare (and also stored online as backup). Users can also edit their photos and leave both the original and the edited version on the website. When viewing photos in the program the 100 most recent albums are synced to provide viewing when offline (or users can simply view all their albums when online using Safari).

Other features include the ability to be notified when friends or family update their albums, to assign a photo to an iPhone contact, and add captions to the pictures. For additional protection, security can be set from the iPhone to password-protect specific albums and undesired pictures can be deleted either before or after they have been uploaded to the site.

Phanfare Photon is available for free from the App Store and includes 1GB of space. For unlimited storage, users must pay $55 per year to upgrade.

AdMob has devised a way to perform outside tracking of download numbers at the App Store, according to announcement. The mobile advertiser says it has launched a new Download Tracking initiative, whose primary goal is to monitor the conversion of clicks on ads to app downloads. As a result of early testing for apps like TapDefense and Urbanspoon, however, AdMob says it has already managed to discern general trends in the app industry.

Free apps have so far proven considerably more popular than paid ones, for example, with an average ad conversion rate of 10 percent, next to a slim 1 percent conversion for paid titles. It likewise appears that the App Store is a more effective means of distributing free software, with an average acquisition cost falling under $1. Regular desktop distribution is significantly more expensive, AdMob claims.

A large portion of the people downloading apps based on advertising are also said to be focused on games, figures suggest. Games are said to have higher conversion rates than any other kind of app, as a rule; the disparity can be dramatic however, with as much as a 100 percent difference between apps despite similar pricing.

InternetSafety.com has announced the mobile version of its Safe Eyes for the iPhone and iPod touch. Originally created for the Mac and PC, Safe Eyes Mobile is filtering software that enables iPhone/iPod touch users to control what content can and cannot be viewed while surfing the web. Working as its own browser, the program contains many features found in Safari including multiple page capabilities, bookmarks, and zoom capabilities. Using the company�s web-based interface, owners can simply log into a password-protected account to change any desired settings or block specific categories for different users.

While the software will be showcased at the Expo, the company has yet to provide a release date.

JVC TeleDock and J300 Sets

JVC on Wednesday rolled out the second wave of its TeleDock hybrid TVs as well as a raft of conventional mid-size sets. The 42- and 46-inch P500, as well as the 32-, 42- and 46-inch P300 all improve the TeleDock formula by significantly expanding the functions of the built-in iPod dock. Apple devices connected to the TV can now show their music and video title and other information directly on the screen and can play music even while watching regular TV content or browsing media stored on the set's TV port.

It also works more tightly with attached PCs and can sync an iPod if the PC is connected over USB; starting the PC itself can also turn the TV on.

All five TeleDock sets output at 1080p and through 10W built-in speakers. They similarly carry three HDMI inputs, two each of component and S-video, and one each for RCA and VGA. JVC doesn't list their pricing but plans to ship the collection in April.

Four regular sets in the J300 line at 32, 42, 46 and 52 inches have also been added and share a new cabinet design as well as a Smart Picture feature that auto-tunes brightness levels. They share the same 1080p resolution and inputs as the TeleDock models but will largely ship earlier, with all but the 52-inch set shipping in March. The largest model is scheduled to appear in August.

Memorex at CES

Electronics builder Memorex has announced a collection of new audio-video systems, generally focused around support for Apple handhelds. The Mi9490P is nominally a slot-loading CD player with an FM radio, but also features a dock on top which supports both iPods and iPhones. Output is rated at 30W, and the stereo also features an LCD with track display and adjustable equalizer settings. A related system is the Mi4290P, an alarm clock. Though it drops the CD player and equalizer, and is capable of just 10W of output, the clock retains an FM tuner and LCD display along with support for iPods and iPhones. Dual alarms allow couples to wake at different times.

The Mi2290 is a portable, iPod-only alarm clock, capable of running off an AC adapter or 10 hours of battery power. It folds for easier carrying, and comes with its own sleeve.

For normal iPod listening Memorex has produced the EB50 and CB25 EarBuds. The former is a pair of in-ear headphones, sold in blue, green and pink metallic colors. The CB25s are conventional earbuds, with optional blue, green, black and orange colors.

The company has also produced the SimpleSurround SoundBar, which emulates surround sound while using only 2.1 channels. Though its dock is also limited to iPods, the SoundBar further incorporates a DVD player with HDMI output, as well as an FM tuner and slots for SD, MMC and USB media. If not on an iPod, supported file playback is limited to MP3 and Windows Media.

The one announcement unrelated to Apple is the MVBD-2520, a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player with 1080p upconversion and Internet access through an Ethernet port. It can handle both 24 and 60p playback, and supports HD audio formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. Like the SoundBar, MP3 and WMA audio can be played using SD and USB media, or else files burned to an optical disc.

All of the Mi-series devices are expected to ship in the first quarter, at prices ranging between $60 and $140. The EarBuds are due in the same timeframe, at cost of $20 for the EB50s and $10 for the CB25s. The SoundBar and MVBD-2520 are both slated to cost $200, though the former will arrive in April, with the latter shipping in early summer.

In portrait mode users can see their notes and the current slide while the landscape orientation shows the current and next slides. The app can also progress through slides by swiping across the devices screen.

* iHandy Level Free (free) is one of the tools from the iHandy Carpenter tool kit. The application shows a standard bubble level in the middle of the screen and uses the iPhones accelerometer to detect position. The level can be fully calibrated allowing users to ensure that it remains accurate and reliable.

Griffin (Booth No. 1902 S) announced a slew of new of new iPod and iPhone products at Macworld today, launching twelve new items, including its new sound-isolating bluetooth headset, covered earlier today on MacNN. Launched today were the TuneFlex AUX, an iPod car system with a steering wheel remote, an iTrip for iPod nano 4G, TuneBuds Fit, a new headphone set, and the new PowerBlock Reserve and PowerJolt Reserve, which power iPods via home outlets and car power, respectively, and include an external battery for mobile use with the iPod. Also announced were the SmartShare USB, a USB Splitter, the Noise-Reducing Audio Cable, TuneJuice, a AAA-battery powered iPod charger, the Charge Converter FireWire-to-USB cable, Navigate, an FM transmitter for the iPod that can control both iPods and iPhones so they can be stored during travel, and Elan Form Chrome, a chrome-plated iPhone case.

The TuneFlex AUX combo includes a mount with a flexible neck, a remote control for the steering wheel, a charger and an AUX-in cable for connecting the iPod/iPhone to the car stereo. The TuneFlex will ship in January for $80. The iTrip for iPod nano 4G is styled to fit the newest iPod nano and brodcasts FM o a car or other FM receiver. The iTrip will ship in February for $50.

TuneBuds Fit are in ear headphones with an anatomical design, featuring aluminum shells and 10mm drivers. They arrive with 3 sets of ear cushions and will be available in February for $50. The PowerBlock Reserve and PowerJolt Reserve each feature an external lithium-ion battery pack that recharges in parallel with an iPod or iPhone. The external pack can be removed (it attaches magnetically) along with the iPod for travel as an external battery and the battery can be interchanged between the PowerBlock and PowerJolt powerpacks. The two chargers will each retail for $40 and are expected in stores in April 2009.

The SmartShare USB splits one USB port into two USB lines with power and data feeds. It works with any machine but was made with the MacBook Air in mind, allowing two USB connections to the otherwise single, recessed port. It ships in January for $20. The Noise-Reducing Audio eliminates interference from ungrounded car stereos, and reduces hum as well. It has a six-foot cable and a 1/8th-inch stereo mini-jack. It ships in February for $20.

TuneJuice for iPhone and iPod uses four AAA batteries for power, allowing for access to a worldwide standard battery for iPod power in the field. It works with most every dock-connector iPod and offers 24-hours of music, six hours of video or two hours of talk time. It ships in January for $30. The Charge Converter (FireWire to USB) works with legacy chargers, adapting them to charge the iPhone 3G and 2008 iPods. It ships in January for $30.

Navigate is an inline controller for connecting an iPhone of iPod touch to a car stereo via FM transmission. It arrives with an iFM app for the iPhone and iPod touch for navigating FM radio. The app has support for Mediaguide's airplay metadata for FM content tracking. The controller has its own interface for use with the iPod or iPhone hidden away. It ships today for $60.

The Elan Form Chrome for iPhone 3G combines Chrome and black leather in a clipless case built around a polycarbonate shell. It includes a screen protector and ships in January for $35.

Radtech launches new gear

RadTech has announced numerous new products at Macworld 2009 (Booth No. 1043 S). Among the new gear is the ARC case for iPod touch and iPhone, a two-piece polyurethane case that clasps on the rear of the iPod and provides access to all ports. It arrives in black, silver, red and blue and ships for $15. Also shipping for the iPhone is the SLAM for iPhone, a clip-based case that holds an iPhone face in or face out with full port access and a 180-degree clip that supports the iPhone as a horizontal video stand. It is available for the iPhone 2G for $8 and the 3G for $15.

RadTech has released Gelz silicone cases for the iPhone 3G and the iPod nano 4G. The cases offer multiple colors and full wrap-around protection. They are shipping in five colors for the Nano, with each priced at $9, while the iPhone 3G has multiple colors across two styles, one thin and one thicker with a ribbed grip. The price on the new case is $9.

In addition, the company released Otterbox Defender for the iPhone, a water- and shock- resistant, dust- and dirt-proof case with a separate belt-clip. It arrives in five color combinations for $15.

New ClearCal screen protectors are also available in anti-glare, transparent and mirrored surfaces, with full face coverage for the iPhone and iPod touch for between $10 to $12. ClearCal screens with anti-glare surfaces were released for the MacBook, MacBook Pro and 24-inch Apple Cinema Display (prices not yet announced).

RadTech also released ProCable in-ear headphones with a built-in microphone and send, end and music buttons. Made from aluminum construction, it also features Sound Valve technology for hearing safety. The new headset is $25 and ships in black, aluminum, pink, blue and gold. JVC is promoting three new home theater systems at CES, the TH-G31, G41 and G51. All three feature 5.1-channel surround speakers, with power rated at 1,000W; these attach to a receiver which decodes DTS and Dolby Digital input, while providing HDMI video output and 1080p upconversion. A front-facing auxiliary input allows additional connections. The G31 is the simplest of the three, providing no extra improvements.

The G41 introduces a dock for iPods and iPhones, capable of feeding both audio and video into a home theater setup. A player's menu can be displayed on a TV, and basic play, pause and skip functions can be controlled through the main remote. The G51 retains the dock, but switches out the other systems' rear channels with wireless speakers.

The G31 should ship in April, at a price of $250. The G41 will follow in May for $330, while the G51 will ship in June for $430.

One mistake here and an iPod could be completely erased and loaded with someone else's music. Tune Blocker provides an old-school analog solution -- a hardware block.

Electronista got a first-hand look at several new Griffin accessories featured at CES and Macworld, including the Navigate controller and upcoming IFM app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The Navigate controller features an integrated FM tuner and a white-on-black LCD screen. The track information was easy to view but subtle, while the control buttons allowed easy browsing through the songs, playlists or FM channels.

The company also previewed its IFM app, a companion for the Navigate that will available sometime in the spring. A list of radio stations is available for a variety of cities, in an easy-to-use interface that worked well even as a pre-release beta. When a data network or Wi-Fi is available, the app provides the album artwork for the current song.

Customers will be able to download IFM for free, and the final version will also include a buy-it-now option to automatically purchase songs from iTunes.

Memorex at CES launched several new audio products including three iPod docks and a touchscreen MP3 player. The Mi9490P offers a 30-watt speaker system, slot-load CD player and an FM radio, with an integrated dock for the iPod or iPhone. The all-black housing is designed with slightly rounded edges and a white-on-black LCD. The Mi4290P provides clock-radio functions in addition to the dock capabilities. Users can control the system with a remote or set the alarm to play an iPod track.

The Mi2290 travel system features neodymium speakers placed on a panel that can stand vertically or fold down flat. The company claims up to 10 hours of playback when using batteries, while an AC adapter is also provided for normal use. A neoprene sleeve is included to protect the device while traveling.

Memorex has jumped into the touchscreen media-player market with the TouchMP. The device features a 320 by 240 pixel resolution from a 2.8-inch LCD, with support for audio, video and image files. The user interface can switch between portrait and landscape modes, but requires a button press to flip the image. Initially the player will offer 8GB of internal storage, but a MicroSD slot can be used to expand the capacity.

The Mi9490P will carry a price of $140, while the Mi4290 will ship for $80 and the Mi2290 travel system is priced at $60. The TouchMP will cost $100 when released. All of the products are expected to ship sometime in the first quarter of this year.

At the CES show, Pioneer showed off a number of new products for the home theater crowd. Made up of four new A/V receivers and three new Blu-ray players, the products bring new features at a lower price level than before. Among the new Blu-ray players is the flagship DBP-09FD with DVD upscaling to 1080p resolutions and 24fps. It is BD Live ready and support Bonus View. Apart from 48-bit deep color support, there are dual HDMI 1.3a outputs and a Pioneer 16-bit video processor.

The BDP-23FD joins the company�s Elite series with BD Live support and 48-bit color support for more realistic grayscale level reproduction. It also sports BD Live support and stores the downloaded content on 1GB of internal memory that is expandable via a USB port. Support for 7.1-channel analog audio and an Ethernet port for incorporating it into a PC-controlled home theater system round out its features. Rounding out the new Blu-ray players are the BDP-120 and BDP-320. The main difference is the 320�s 1GB of internal memory in addition to its support of external USB flash drives; a feature standard on the BDP-120.

As for the newly revealed A/V receivers, all four are Works with iPhone and iPod certified, displaying song and artist information on a connected screen. The multi-format USB port on the top three models enhances digital music from Apple�s connected digital audio players. All sport dual-zone audio output capabilities as well, and will pass through HDMI audio; impressive considering the entry-level unit�s low price.

The flagship BDP-09FD Blu-ray player is currently available, priced at about $2,200. The BDP-23FD is due for a June release, with pricing set at $599. The BDP-120 and BDP-320 should launch a little earlier in the spring, by May, priced at $299 and $399, respectively. The Pioneer VSX-519V-K receiver will be priced at $199, the VSX-819V-K at $299, VSX-919H-K at $399 and the VSX-1019AH-K at $499. All are due for a spring release.

JVC Mobile at CES introduced a unique car audio head unit known as the KD-AVX77. The 5.4-inch wide touchscreen unit forgoes nearly all buttons for its control interface. Instead, the device also has a proximity sensor that can register a user�s moving hand in front of it to exit its screen saving mode. As the controls are virtual, users can switch the positioning of commonly used functions such as the volume controls. The head unit can play back DVDs as well as CDs, displaying movie content on its display, which is nearly ideally suitable for widescreen movie playback, where the black lines on top or bottom of the image are removed.

Bluetooth support is integrated into the KD-AVX77, along with a wired microphone for handsfree phone conversations. iPods or iPhones can be controlled and played back thanks to a rear full-speed USB 2.0 port. Users can control the connected iPods via the devices themselves or the head unit itself. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel is supported, as are dual-zone setups. The head unit is rated at 50W x 4 and comes ready for connecting HD Radio, satellite radio or a CD changer.

The KD-AVX77 receiver will begin shipping in March, priced at nearly $650.

IPod touch use rises

Mobile advertiser AdMob is reporting explosive growth for the iPod touch in its December report, with an unusual demand after Christmas. The Touch is said to have become the #2 device in the AdMob Network, achieving a 4.7 percent share. The US lead the way with 70 percent of purchase requests, though Canada, the UK, Mexico, Germany and France are all said to have shown strong growth.

The combination of the Touch and the iPhone were 15.5 percent of the entire mobile market in December. The iPhone OS gained 6 percent on OS share in December, rising to 32 percent, and was strongest in North and Latin America. The numbers are said to not accurately reflect the Touch's growth, though, due to its classification as a non-smartphone.

Smartphone share increased in the mobile market as a whole, moving up 11 percent to hold 33 percent. Symbian's OS ranked first with a 41 percent global share, reaching over 90 percent in Asia and Africa. RIM and Windows Mobile were well behind the iPhone at 10 and 9 percent, with Palm a distant 4 percent, having suffered a 5 percent decline.

Freeverse is showcasing four upcoming iPhone and iPod touch games at Macworld Expo: Flick Baseball, SlotZ Racer, Roads of Ruin, and Days of Thunder. Flick Baseball is an arcade baseball game where users can customize their characters and play against other teams. The will include several modes, including full season, exhibition and championship as well as an added feature: home-run competition. Controls for the game have yet to be fully developed.

SlotZ Racer is an iPhone version of the old slot car game, where the person�s car is kept on a track by a small pin sticking out of the bottom of the vehicle. The game will come with pre-defined tracks ranging in difficulty, along with added abilities such as a multiplayer mode, and being able to create custom race tracks.

Roads of Ruin, takes place in the year 2023 after a nuclear war has damaged the world and states are still at war. Players must drive a motorcycle to deliver messages and packages between cities, while fighting off attacks from people after the goods. Money earned from completing deliveries can be used to upgrade the equipment.

Days of Thunder is based on the original motion picture and is currently being developed for Paramount pictures. In the game, players hop into their NASCAR Stock car and race against other drivers around the track. During the race users will have to time when to go in for pit stops, to get gas and replacement tires.

SlotZ Racer will be available from the App Store within a couple of weeks (the release date for the other three games was not provided).

Alpine intros receivers

Alpine took the opportunity at the CES show to introduce three new head units that will soon be available on the market, with the iXA-W404 and nearly identical iDA-X305 and iDA-X303. Neither has a traditional optical disk drive, relying instead on digital media as their soruce files. The W404 has a double DIN form factor in order to better fit into the dashboards of modern cars, while the latter uses a more traditional single-DIN layout. The Digital Media Station iXA-W404 has an iPhone-like interface, where users can glide their fingers over the 4.3-inch touchscreen to navigate their music libraries.

Alpine made sure the W404 can charge and control all generations of dockable iPods and iPhones, incorportating a chip into the head unit that detects whether the charging system requires the old 12V or the 5V feed of the newer products.

The new Digital Media Receivers that are the iDA-X305, which replaces the iDA-X100, and the iDA-X303 feature 2.2-inch screens, with the X305�s a TFT display capable of displaying album art stored on attached iPods or iPhones.
All three new products are Bluetooth, HD radio and satellite radio ready with the addition of Alpine�s add-on modules, and have iTunes tagging capabilities, allowing users to save a song name playing on HD radio for a later purchase through iTunes.

The iXA-W404 will launch in North America sometime in April, with prices set at $550. The iDA-X305 will be available at the end of January with a retail price of $350. The X303, with the same specs and features but a less advanced three-color LCD display with two lines of text will launch at the same time, priced at $250.

Developers at Citrix have been doing some guerilla marketing at Macworld Expo, holding impromptu demonstrations of forthcoming app allowing iPhone users to run Windows. The app is actually an iphone version of the company's XenDesktop thin client software. The virtualization software supports most Windows XP and Vista applications.

In a demonstration for MacNN, developer Chris Fleck showed an iPhone smoothly operating several Windows applications, and displayed a Windows Desktop. Fleck was also able to perform a cut and paste operation within PowerPoint.

Fleck says the company has received a "positive" response from Apple on its efforts, although there's no word when the Citrix iPhone app will be approved and released. He says the app will be made available for free to lure more businesses to its XenApp server software.

Citrix apparently sees a bright future for the iPhone in the medium-to-large business market. Fleck says "demand is coming from the top down," as executives, doctors and other professionals adopt the iPhone and urge their company IT department to support the platform.

Z.buds: no more tangles

Designers at Zagg audio think they've found a niche in the crowded market for iPhone earbuds: eliminating tangles. Z.buds are equipped with stiffer, yet sturdier nylon cables that are not likely to bunch together into a tangled mess, the company says. A quick hands-on demo at CES shows the technology does appear to work -- the Z.buds were hard to tangle even when wadded up.

At about $80, most users will want more than just tangle reduction, and Zagg has added several other features to justify the price tag. A noise-cancelling microphone is built-in, along with a button to answer calls and control music playback. There is also an in-line volume control, several sets of soft adaptors for different ear sizes, and a handy button loop for keeping the cord from dangling.

Available in red or black, Z.buds ship with the special 3.5mm plug that works on the iphone without an adaptor. The buds work with other phones as well, according to Zagg. The 10mm speakers are billed as high-end, with a 20Hz to 20KHz frequency response. Available in red or black, Z.buds are available now online, although the black model is backordered until early February.

Fuel cells reach consumers

Long-awaited fuel cell technology is about to reach consumers, and two companies are showing off competing technologies at CES. Medis Technologies is using alkaline technology in its squeeze-to-activate power packs, while Horizon Fuel Cell Tehnology is using compact hydrogen-based cylinders about the size of conventional flashlight batteries.

Medis' non-flammable borohydride-based technology is similar to that used in alkaline batteries "without producing any polluting emissions," according to the company. When a fuel cell is depleted, it can be recycled using the included container. The cell ships in a deactivated condition so it can be stored for long periods of time -- a squeeze brings it to life.

Medis is showcasing three products at CES. The 24/7 Fuel Cell Power Pak is designed for small electronic devices like iPods and cellphones, delivering 20 hours of continuous power. Medis estimates the cell can charge a smartphone up to 4 times and a conventional cellphone 6 times. The $25 power pack comes with a one-watt charger cable with a nokia tip and adaptors for standard USB, mini USB, micro USB, and the Palm Treo.

Designed for power-hungry smartphones, the Xtreme Portable Fuel CellPower Solution adds a more powerful 4-watt charger cable for $50. The Fuel Cell Emergency Kit includes the charger cable, tips and an LED flashlight in a plastic case for $60.

The 24/7 Fuel Cell Power Pak is available now at some Best Buy stores, the other two products should be available next month.

Medis' chief competitor, Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, has been around several years, selling educational kits that showcase proprietary solid form hydrogen-based cells. Horizon is preparing to release the MiniPak, a cellphone charger using stainless steel fuel cell cartridges.

Horizon says each cartridge is equivalent to 4 AA batteries, but in a smaller, recyclable form factor that contains no lead, mercury or cadmium. The product is being billed as a cost-effective high-performance green alternative to conventional batteries. Some environmentalists might not consider any disposable product to be green, but the company says its working on a home refilling kit or a system for exchanging used cells for new ones.

The MiniPak delivers about one watt through a USB socket for charging iPods and other small devices. About the size of a pocket camera, the MiniKit could be available this year. Final pricing has not been set, but company officials say the fuel cell cartridges are expected to sell for under $10.

Sharp's CES introductions have continued with a major expansion of its iPod speaker dock line as well as two new 2.1-channel sound bars for home theaters. The DK-AP7N (not yet shown) is a folding yet subwoofer-equipped dock tailored both to listening to iPods and home as well as travel use; battery power lets it play sound for up to five hours before returning to an AC adapter. The stereo has DSP hardware that theoretically improves the quality of compressed audio as well as video out for supporting iPods.

The DK-CL6N and its anti-bacterial, hotel-oriented sibling the DK-CL66N are both full clock radios and put out 4W, two-channel sound with dual alarms that can use the iPod as well as the AM/FM tuner. The two also have video out and are due in May for $100.

Sharp has also rolled out its first sound bars in its home theater range. The HT-SB200 (pictured) and HT-SB300 generate 34W of sound and are designed for very tight home theater environments where true surround isn't an option, including either wall mounts or 32-inch and larger TVs. The SB200 is capped at standard 2.1-channel sound, but the SB300 adds virtual Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS decoding as well as a connector to add a larger dedicated subwoofer. Both have aux-in jacks for portable audio devices. The SB200 appears this month for $250, while the SB300 ships in April for $300.

Software-as-a-service company Servoy has released the iPhone Application Builder, a tool meant to simplify web application development for iPhones and iPod touches. The tool is said to run on any SQL database, whether local or hosted online, and support the creation of business-oriented apps without any necessary programming expertise, thanks to the use of a special mini-IDE. The Builder takes metadata from databases and tables and generates all forms and objects.

Each form created through the tool can be assigned to use a different table or database, and the results can be natively previewed in their final form. Running the Builder first requires downloading the Community Edition of Servoy Developer, which includes five free client licenses.

HAVA for iPhone

Monsoon has announced upcoming iPhone support for its TV placeshifting hardware, HAVA. Designed to work through broadband Internet or a network-connected PC, HAVA allows users to watch and control live TV, including satellite and TiVo content. With the iPhone application, users will have access to an on-screen remote from which they can watch TV, pause, change channels, browse a program guide and launch recorded shows.

Also coming is a tool for exporting HAVA DVR recordings to iTunes, which will allow offline viewing on a handheld. Both the HAVA iPhone app and the export tool for iTunes will be available as free downloads; HAVA for iPhone is slated to be released during the second quarter of 2009, while the export utility will come in the first.

Sennheiser HD 800

Electronista at CES had a chance to try out Sennheiser's new HD 800, the company's latest flagship headphones geared for audiophiles. At first glance, the housing is clearly more modern and technologically-inspired than the relatively drab exterior of the predecessor products, the HD 600 and HD 650. More importantly, the company developed entirely new 56mm ring-shaped transducers that boast an incredible frequency response of 6 Hz to 51,000 Hz. The annular design is said to vibrate the entire air volume over the transducer to create a full-bodied sound with clarity at the low end, but without causing the high-frequency distortion found with large drivers.

Many companies spend a significant amount of development effort merely refining old designs to create a marginal gain in performance. Instead of releasing new HD models year-after-year based on the 600, the company remained dormant in the high-end headphone category while it created a completely redesigned product.

My first judgment of the HD 800 was fairly critical, hoping the company did not follow the bad habits of its peers by releasing a new shiny product with cool looks but without significant performance gain. The transition from the HD 600 to 650 was lackluster, so my expectations were not high at CES. That attitude changed very quickly, however, as soon I took a seat in the listening room and fired up the new cans.

The sound clarity and distinction of the HD 800 was nothing short of amazing, while the transparency truly raises the bar for headphones. The music came alive with astonishing resolution and transient response, making the HD 650 sound muddled in comparison, but without seeming overtly bright or harsh. The sonic characteristics should be well-liked by a wide range of listeners, providing wonderful definition across the whole frequency spectrum.

Sennheiser's new headphones are absolutely the best that I have ever had a chance try, even among flagship products from other top-notch companies such as Grado, AKG and Audio Technica. The soundstage was also clearly improved from the 600 series, with a new ear cup design that sends sound waves into the ear at an angle to replicate conditions that the brain processes to interpret spatial localization.

Sennheiser kept everyone waiting for a few years before releasing an answer to the HD 650, but the wait seems well worth the revolutionary sound provided by the HD 800. The headphones are not for everyone, especially with the $1400 price tag. Anyone looking for the best of the best, however, should probably take a listen. Although the HD 800 will ship beginning this spring, the headphones are handmade in Germany with limited production speed.

Relatively new competitors now have the advantage in the smartphone business, Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer said late yesterday to the Financial Times (registration required). Although the executive was well-known for believing in early 2007 that the iPhone wouldn't get market share, he now says that both Apple and BlackBerry creator RIM have "clear market momentum" and that the two are part of an industry likely to survive the poor world economy.

During Microsoft's CES keynote speech, Ballmer was nonetheless confident of Windows Mobile and observed that about 20 million devices using the operating system have sold in the past 12 months, 11 of which sold over a million each. The HTC Touch Diamond is one of these and is known to have managed at least 3 million units in the second half of the year.

The early Microsoft official is nonetheless less confident about the Zune and deemphasizes the importance of the music player hardware and insisting that the industry push is now towards software. Ballmer sees media-only devices like the Zune gradually being phased out and that more generalized hardware like smartphones will dominate the field.

He also supports the formal Microsoft position that there will be no Zune phone and that the brand is most likely to survive as a feature of Windows Mobile rather than in Microsoft-desgned hardware.

Senior officials from Australian carrier Telstra claims on Monday that HTC is developing a smartphone that would trump devices from Apple and Palm. The executives, who observed some of the competition at CES this past week, say HTC has a touchscreen device in the works which is "better and more functional" than either the iPhone or the just-unveiled Pre and should have both a larger display than existing HTC phones as well as custom software written by the phone maker itself; the inaugural T-Mobile G1 currently uses only Google's stock software.

While primarily dismissive of the iPhone, the Telstra staff notes that Palm's phone has yet to reach the market and so has yet to really compete. The unnamed HTC device isn't expected to ship until the spring, or roughly the same time as the Pre reaches Sprint.

Whether or not the Telstra statements are accurate is unknown. Both the Touch HD and MAX 4G have 3.8-inch, 800x480 touchscreens and are considered large among smartphones; however, the reference may instead be to HTC's more widespread devices, such as the 2.8-inch Touch Diamond and Touch Pro.

The Taiwan-area company is best-known for its Windows Mobile phones but has already said it expects its second phone to ship in April.
